An Explosion of Colours

In my last post, I went classic all in black and navy.  Today, I’m feeling the zest of a shiny brand new year and I’m wearing an explosion of colours.  I like to be unpredictable, style-wise.  Just when you think I might zig, I zag.  In this particularly colourful ‘zag,’ I’m wearing a coat which I have since returned.  I’ve been looking for a bright patchwork faux fur coat for about a year.  I want one that is really REALLY colourful, like a unicorn wrapped in a rainbow seen through a prism.  This one was close, but just not right.  I wanted more of my favourite colours in there.  I don’t wear orange or yellow clothing (admit it, my hair looks pretty vile with the yellow, doesn’t it?).  I love the turquoise and cobalt and black, but I need some red or fuchsia or some of ‘my’ other colours in it.  Plus, the sleeves were too short for Miss Monkey Arms here.   That’s the trouble when you buy from a Chinese website; even when you buy a size L, they are not making things for a Western L!  So back went the coat, and my search continues for a rainbow faux fur confection.  I’ve even gone so far to contact an Etsy seller who makes faux fur rainbow children’s toys to see if she could make me a coat with her materials (she can’t).  The lengths I go to, honestly!

SheIn colours coat

The reason why I decided to even bother putting it on the blog is that when I put this coat on my Instagram stories video, most people LOVED it because the coat is so photogenic.  It photographs much better than it looks in real life.  Surprisingly, when we photographed it out in the street near my house, people stopped me to rave over how much they loved the coat… both properly crazy people and normal people!  I had a few fleeting moments of thinking maybe I wouldn’t send it back, but I would rather hold out and find one that I really love.  The colours of this coat work so well with a necklace I have, so I thought, why not, I’ll put it on the blog anyway.  Isn’t the necklace amazing?  I discovered this Belgian jewellery designer, Reina (soreina.beyoux on Instagram) through my friend Greet (journeyofastylist).   Reina’s jewellery is all made from Swarovski crystals; this particular piece had my name all over it.  I thought the orange was going to be red (as you may know, red and pale turquoise blue is my absolute favourite colour combination) but I still like it with the orange, and when you wear it with red, it looks red.

Orange and blue colours necklace

Since I am clearly in More Is More, Less Is A Bore mode with this outfit, I wore these insane new sunglasses from my favourite cheap and cheerful brand, ZeroUV.  They look yellow, orange, red, or black, depending on the light (I now want them in every colour they come in).  Like the necklace, I adore them with this coat.  I’m really hoping I don’t regret sending this coat back!  If you want to look like you are wearing the cast of Monsters Inc. in a coat, full shopping details are credited under the last photo.

It could be that you’ve experienced the best of the coat already. I think it’s fine that you remain on the hunt. Speaking of hunting, the main thing I learned from Downton Abbey is this: Women over 40 (and 50 and 60 and 70 and 80) look fabulous in fur. I know you will always choose faux, and it looks just as smashing.

The coat is fun, but I’d vote to hold out for THE One. The colorful faux fur seems to be trending still, and you may have luck in the next couple of seasons. And that necklace…wow, gorgeous!!

I love the coat Lisa! It’s definitely better to hold out for the perfect one though. I have long arms too – they are often referred to in our house as “mummy’s long monkey arms”. The necklace is stunning – red and turquoise is one of my favourite colour combinations too. Happy New Year!!!

This was a highly entertaining post. Indeed such a coat will be a hell of a conversation piece and not for the faint hearted. I trust you to pull that off. Easily. I love how it shows in these pictures but I get why you sent it back. I always buy so much while chasing something else. You are better.
The necklace is very beautiful and I would have given it front stage. Like on a black dress or a light blue dress. To shine and get all the attention. But I am not a more is more girl. There have to be differences otherwise the world gets boring. It does go very well with the coat, I admit that.
    The sunglasses are fun.

Thanks so much, Greetje! I’ve worn the necklace with a red cardigan coat, and it was wonderful with that as well. It adds a lot to a basic outfit, but I couldn’t resist the perfect match with this obnoxious coat 😀 xx

Well, that coat certainly is a stand out—but I bet you can find another that fits better in the arms! Although I would never think that the yellow looks bad with your hair!
I truly think everything looks just wonderful…in fact, I’d wear it in a second!

“Miss Monkey Arms”… I’m crying over here Lisa, that’s almost exactly what Keefy calls me with my long thin twiglets arms!! ????????

I totally agree with you that the yellow isn’t quite right, so although it looks fabulous on the blog and Insta, I’m kinda glad you’ve sent it back in the hopes that you’ll find the perfect one. But BOY do those colours look good on screen, especially with those crazy gorgeous sunglasses and that TDF necklace!!

I absolutely love it, but get why you sent it back. When on a mission to find ‘the one’ if it isn’t perfect, then it’s wrong. I’m loving those glasses. I popped over to their website – that was over and hour ago!
Keep hunting, I can’t wait to see what you’ll find next.

And those crazy sunglasses, what a fab idea. You’re a woman after my own heart re the zig/zag – I hate to be predicatable style-wise.

you do totally own this coat when you wear it. But you’ll never love it like the mythical one you seek. This has happened to me tons of times i pursue something then when I get it I’m lm slightly deflated as its not as fabulous as when its the elusive vision in my head. Actually not just clothes this happens with men I date too!! happy new year lovely lisa xx

Thank you, Angela! I’ll probably have to have something custom made to get anything near my mythical unicorn coat. As with dating, you’re quite right… the expectation and the reality are often very different animals! Happy New Year, gorgeous. xx

Now that’s a technicolour dream coat I could very well see myself in, Lisa 🙂 but yes, I concur. The sleeves are too short and that particular fluorescent-esque shade of yellow is rather nasty on just about everyone. Save for supermodels, of course, you know, with the word “super” in their monikers, they could pull off anything. Hate them. Anyway, I’ve been on the prowl for a rainbow shaggy number myself, taking my time since the occasion arises but few and far between here in Houston. I remember seeing a really pretty one on ASOS but the palette was blush pinks, light silver, ivory and dove grey. Not quite technicolour.

Still you look SPECTACULAR in this, Lisa, really truly spectacular. And I am experiencing serious cravings for your sunnies.

Happy 2017, my friend, I hope you’ve had nothing but wondrous moments since the start of this new year xoxo

Thanks so much, Sheela! Yes, I figured you’d like the sunnies. If you don’t know the ZeroUV website already, then that will be an extremely dangerous place for you to discover. It is a treasure trove of affordable sunglasses, from basic to totally bonkers and in every colour of the rainbow!

I think I know which ASOS coat you’re talking about. I’ve resigned myself to doing something custom, or else I won’t be happy with it.

Happy 2017 back to you, sweetie. I can’t wait to see what you get up to this year, lady! xx
