How to dress for spring if you don’t like florals

Remember when in The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda Priestley deadpans, “Florals? For spring? Ground-breaking.”? As much as I love real flowers, regular readers will know that I’m not sartorially floral.  When I’m in floral prints I feel like I am wearing someone else’s clothes.  So, besides florals, what is quintessentially spring to me?  The sky.  The welcome sunshine along with that particular shade of cerulean blue that we haven’t seen since the end of last summer.  Here is a photo snapped with my phone  a few days ago.  These tones of blue whisper to me ‘Winter is over.’ And also, ‘Get ready for sweat, sandals, and bad hair days.’

Blue sky and clouds

Inspired by the sky, I pulled this several-years-old Michael Kors dress out of my closet.  I love it because of its exact shade of blue.  Sticking with my sky theme, I wore it with a cloud-white leather trench coat and nearly every other blue accessory that I own!

Since glitter is a neutral in my world, I wore multicoloured glitter heels (which I also wore in my last post).  They get so much use that I really wish I had bought two pairs of them.

Blue house, pink blossom

London is heaving with blossom at the moment.  The first time I visited London I was in my twenties. It was April, and I remember being so taken with the flowering trees, the cheerful window boxes overflowing with flowers, and the parks full of colourful blooms.  It certainly made a change from concrete New York!  I mean, just look at this dappled pastel section of the street and my neighbour’s gorgeous blue house.

This bag is a recent (£12) ebay score.  I love an oversized clutch, and I can’t find ANY in stores.  I wasted spent a few hours going from store to store to look for one, and all I could find were smallish evening clutches in silver or gold, presumably for the upcoming wedding season.  I’m was thrilled with this one that I bought it in a few other colours as well.

Last but certainly not least is THE NECKLACE.  I’ve been wearing it on repeat since I got it, as my local friends know well!  It goes beautifully with jeans and a blouse (what I’m wearing it with right this minute), with a cocktail dress, with a sweater, or with a simple shift dress like the one  in this post.  It is a magnet for compliments; I get stopped and asked about it everywhere I go.  I call it the blue waterfall necklace, and I’m quite liking how nicely it goes with my spring sky themed outfit!  If you need one too, I have just a few available in my Sequinist Shop.

When I was last in Europe, the stunning variety of trench-coats had me salivating. Definitely the “it” coat. And yours, in white leather? Against that Easter Egg blue wall? It’s like Columbo meets The Avengers. So fab. All you need now is a fashion crime to investigate.

Ohhhhh, I’m for sure keeping my eyes peeled for fashion crimes to investigate now, Mithra! The Europeans do love a good trench… trying to style out the often rubbish weather, I s’pose. xx

I used to have a trench in off-white leather… so good. You have a spring colour and if it gets dirty, you can wipe it clean. Very handy. Unfortunately I burst out of it. Although I don’t think I have gained weight. The fat must have chosen different places to settle… sigh.
Of course you look nothing but stunning in the coat, the dres, the shoes and of course the necklace. Instead of a floral dress you let the necklace get all the attention. Very pretty.

I rarely wear this coat; I don’t know why, I think I assume that I’ll ruin it with a pen or a lipstick or something! Thank you for your kinds words, Greetje xx

Love this and feel exactly the same about florals! I love them to death but they either take me back to when I was 6 or make me feel old beyond my years. I’m sure there is a floral out there for me, we’ve just never been properly introduced :). Your blue sky dress and cloud white trench are the perfect homage to the gorgeous blue skies of spring and the magical blossoms dotting trees right now. I also gravitate towards pastel pinks and blush shades, as well as bright yellows with khaki greens and splashes of orange to channel the warmth. It carries me all through summer. #brilliantblogposts

I love your alternative ideas for dressing for Spring if you don’t want to wear florals. Bright colors are always a cool way to incorporate some wow into your wardrobe for Spring. I need to experiment with colors a bit more! You always do color too well.
