Hoodie sweatshirt with a side of sequins

I’m usually fairly trend-resistant.  In fact, I hate to have on what everyone else has on!  Because of the blog, I spend a lot of time on Instagram, and if I see the same item in my Instagram feed more than five times, I’m DONE!  OVER!  BORED!  with it (don’t get me started on the Bella Freud ‘1970’ jumper that has spread like a flu virus this winter).

The oversized Vetements hoodie sweatshirts have appeared a few times in my feed, but not enough to cause me major trend fatigue.  On the contrary, the idea of wearing a huge sweatshirt (oh, the cosiness!) as a dress really grew on me.  I first noticed one on mega-blogger Chiara Ferragni at New York Fashion Week.

Then RiRi wore one many times… dressed up with strappy heels, dressed way down with pool slides, and in the middle with sneakers from her Puma line, as seen here.

Rita Ora wore this fabulous Vetements slogan hoodie dress with their signature sock boots while out and about in New York.

I’m not about to pay Vetements prices for a sweatshirt, so I snooped around on a few of my favourite cheap and cheerful websites to see what I could find.  I found this very simple one on ASOS.  Then this slightly fancier one with a ribboned sleeve detail on Topshop.  But on SheIn I found the perfect sweatshirt hoodie dress for me… black with a silver sequin Eiffel tower.  The idea of sequins, Paris, and a sweatshirt all coming together in a cozy dress format was too much for me to resist, et voila, here it is.  I’m wearing it to slouch around on the weekends, to pop over gym gear on chilly mornings, and to do the school run in.  NOBODY needs to see my white legs in the dead of winter, so right now I’m wearing it with Wolford tights and some worn-in (on the verge of being worn-out) old Rag and Bone boots.  In slightly warmer weather, I think it would look super with bare legs and these Isabel Marant boots which I am absolutely dying to have.

The man responsible for this oversized sweatshirt trend (I really hate that word, ‘trend’) is Demna Gvasalia.  If you don’t know who he is, here’s a summary.  Originally from Tbilisi, Georgia, he shot to fashion fame after graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and working at prestigious Maison Martin Margiela and Louis Vuitton.  The 35 year old Gvasalia has a very disruptive angle on fashion, and founded Vetements as a way to channel his vision, working alongside a handful of anonymous designers on his team.  He takes inspiration from a small group of friends who are focused on clothes being fun, irreverent, and reflective of modern street culture.  Luxury brand Kering (who owns Gucci, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Boucheron, and Saint Laurent, among others) appointed him to run Balenciaga as well, so he splits his time equally between edgy Vetements and more traditional Balenciaga.  Gvasalia is nothing if not unpredictable, so his recent Vetements show opened with a genteel older woman in a fur coat, the polar opposite of the club-kids culture he is known for (read about him on the Vetements website if you’re curious).  Just like Alessandro Michele at Gucci, he is changing the way fashion defines beauty and the way fashion houses ‘dictate’ beauty to consumers.  So far, he’s riffed on the DHL delivery uniform, the Champion sports logo, Juicy Couture, hipster tartan, and police uniforms… not exactly what we usually associate with high fashion.  He revels in being ‘alternative’ and unsettling.  I’m just glad that he made a sweatshirt dress a ‘thing’ and I wonder why no one ever did this before?!  I may need another (I’m thinking something pastel) for spring.  How about you?  Is this something you’d wear either as loungewear or out and about?

I don’t mind trends, but I can’t stand ugly clothes and unfortunatley to me at least most of those Vetements items fall into that category. I fear I sound like an out of touch oldie but I feel completely ‘Emperors New Clothes’ about the DHL T Shirt! Though it was tempting to mug our regular delivery guy for his and flog it on eBay to whatever fool would buy it. Or perhaps get ahead of next trend and strip the UPS man of his brown 2 piece and see if that catches on!

Your sweatshirt however is fab – being longer and slimmer cut its much more elegant looking and the Eiffel Tower is perfect. I’d definitely wear one like that for casual days and trips to the park.

I completely agree with your thoughts, Rachel. A lot of Vetements’ clothes are subversive for the sake of being subversive rather than being ‘artistic’. LOL at your idea of being ahead of the trend and swiping a UPS uniform 🙂

Let me know if you get a sweatshirt dress. There are some nice ones around! xx

Although I’m not a fan of Vetements I adore your Eiffel Tower hoodie homage to it! In fact I don’t believe the hoodie wasn’t made for you personally Lisa 😉 You always manage to make every look your own – You own it!
Thanks for the link to Vetements I found their article about the upcycled double fur absolutely fascinating. As for the Silver haired Madame Milanesa, Brava Belladonna!

Awww, thank you Michelle. I’m glad you like the sweatshirt dress. The linked article is good, no? I’m fascinated by Demna, even if I don’t love everything he designs. My heart and soul remain with the aesthetic of Gucci and Valentino right now! xx

The sweatshirt is you, dollink. I love it; yes, I’d wear it. Nothing better than comf and cute. I’d love to justify the Eiffel Tower on mine but I think I’d have to have Chicago’s Water Tower instead.

It is a conundrum….on one hand it’s perfect to have fun with our clothing, but on the other hand, this style seems the opposite of flattering. Not that flattering is the all important factor—but…..
I think the way to make this great, is like you have done. Keep the rest of the outfit more dressy and form fitting. I think if you had paired this with distressed jeans & tennies, it’d have looked too sloppy for my taste!!

Don’t worry, you’re unlikely to ever see me in distressed jeans, Jodie 🙂 Never say never, but it isn’t likely! Some of the unflattering Vetements pieces remind of 90’s grunge/heroin chic, where the aim was to make you look as wrecked as possible. It is hard to wear for our generation! xx

I’m just *barely* warm enough to wear this without a coat on some days. It is supposed to get cold later this week, so I’ll be all layered up again shortly, I’m sure. Your ballerina sweatshirt with a long skirt sounds absolutely glorious, and makes me want to try that! Can’t wait to see you in a few months. xx

Lisa, I have been looking at athleisure wear lately and have just purchased 2 pairs of stylish sneakers, so the idea does appeal to me, as I’m not always looking to dress up, especially on weekends! I love the sparkly Eiffel Tower and do like this more streamlined cut! Love that you styled it with gorgeous boots! Looks great

I trust you in all things fashion (I purchased that floral overlay dress from ASOS which I loved but which was too small) but not sure about a sweatshirt dress. Does it ride up?? Those weird sock boots though, I just adore.

Oh, great, thank you! Yes, everything from ASOS seems to run small; I always order a size up. Keep an eye on ASOS, sometimes they re-stock popular items.

The sweatshirt dress is loose enough that it hangs and doesn’t ride up. It has two slits on the side which keep it from creeping. I’m crazy about those sock boots too; I loved the light blue ones. xx

Oh La La! You would have many Parisians to melt in this look, Lisa! So glittery, so short and so hot! Its the first time I actually see a sexy hoodie dress, usually they’re too oversized, not showing any curves at all. Rocking the look Lady! xx Abby

I totally agree with you, Anastasia. About 90% of Vetements is very Emperors New Clothes in my view, but there are a few winners. I’d NEVER pay Vetements prices for any of their clothes, though. I can see you rocking a monochrome sweatshirt dress 🙂 xx
