Parrot or Pigeon, which one is your style flock?

Parrot and pigeonParrot vs Pigeon

As you know, I love statement dressing.  The more challenging the statement, the better!  If I have the choice of dressing like a parrot or dressing like a pigeon, I’ll choose the parrot nearly every time.  Of course I have my pigeon days in jeans and a grey cashmere sweater; we all have to have everyday outfits… but I don’t feel as joyful and alive in those clothes.  I simply have a better day in sparkle and colour.  If I am wearing something daring, I may have a twinge of doubt just before I walk out the door, but once I’m out, I feel empowered by my brave choice.  I encourage you to push your style out of your comfort zone now and then; it pays big dividends.  A style rut gives us no delight.

Krasimira coat

Take this faux hair coat from emerging designer Krasimira Stoyneva.  It was love at first sight for me.  I adore that it is synthetic hair, but it still has the visual impact of fur (which I don’t wear).  The Mondrian colour palette rocks my world.  The versatile shape can be worn with a dress or trousers.  What is even better is that I can RENT it!  I’ve recently discovered Wear the Walk, where you can rent up and coming designer clothing for a fraction of the purchase price.  It makes so much sense.  If you have an event to go to but don’t want to buy something new that you might only wear once or twice, this is a perfect solution.  In these days where social media plays such a part of our lives (especially for the younger generation and for bloggers) you don’t want to wear the same thing to several weddings or events.  From a sustainability perspective, you’re not buying another piece of fast fashion, but renting a high-quality (in some cases nearly couture level) item and supporting an emerging designer’s business.  Americans have known and loved Rent the Runway for several years.  Wear The Walk is a similar concept, except in true British style, the designers are more avant garde and less mainstream.  It is a great way to experiment with style.

In perusing the Wear the Walk website, I’ve discovered lots of new-to-me designers.  Krasimira Stoyneva’s work is my favourite but there are many other cracking pieces I’d love to try, like this gorgeous silver coat by Charlotte Zimbehl, this prismatic skirt and top by Minnanhui, or this plum velvet embroidered coat by Varga.

If you fall madly in love with something on Wear the Walk, you can purchase it.  Now that I’ve discovered Krasmira on here, I want more of her pieces (especially the long furry skirt coming for A/W 2017).  The movement in these colourful wefts of hair is gorgeous; I’m jumping to demonstrate!  You want to twirl and jump when wearing her shaggy clothes.

When I wore this coat, so many navy-grey-and-black-clad Parisian women complimented me on it.  I think inside every Parisian pigeon, there is an inner parrot desperate to fly out!   Here are some more photos of a glorious coat in a glorious Paris on a glorious spring day.

What an amazing piece. And a great idea to rent clothes from up and coming designers. I’ve taken a look at the site – lots to choose from!

There are some really avant garde clothes on there, and also some very conservative ones. It is a good mix, and makes me feel much better about working with items you only wear a few times. Still, this coat is something I’d wear a lot, so after test driving it, I WANT IT! xx

How amazing are these photos and look my dear Lisa! I love the concept and title “parrot or pigeon” and you are definitely a parrot to me! I am always inspired of your statement dressing and impeccable choice of colours and accessories, that I was lucky to witness yesterday that I finally met you in person! These websites sound very great to rent some pieces, especially for us bloggers, instead of buying another fast fashion piece. And it’s great to be able to buy the item if you fall in love with the piece (which is very typical for me haha)! How fantastic are this Louboutins? First time I see them!
Thanks so much for sharing and I will definitely check these websites!
Amazing photos by the way 🙂

Thank you for all of your kinds words, Stella! It was so brilliant to FINALLY meet you yesterday; you’re as amazing and gorgeous in person as I knew you would be.

I hope these rental websites do well and that there are many more of them in the future. I love the idea of having a good versatile capsule-type wardrobe plus renting statement pieces to satisfy our desire for new things! xx

You ask a great questions, Lisa, Sometimes I am a pigeon and other times – a parrot. No wonder all the Parisian women complimented you on this outfit because you look incredible. That rainbow feathery jacket is stunning and such a piece of art!

Welcome by and join my brand-new linkup this week. I love your style. Thanks, Ada. =)

Oh how fantastically beautiful. That is my problem with the concept of renting. Pieces so gorgeous make me very greedy. I WANT to OWN it haha. It is perfect. Much nicer than the colourful furry coat you sent back this winter. This is more special.
And your husband made such good photos. Again.

Thank you, Greetje! I do like the idea that this jacket is ‘on tap’ for me to rent whenever I like 🙂 Her whole collection is amazing, and the website has introduced me to so many designers I’d never have known otherwise. I agree, this is SO MUCH NICER than the coat that I sent back. I knew it wasn’t right… I’ll pass along your photo compliments to my husband. Again. xx

Thank you, Mithra! I spent years and years in black and charcoal grey. Maybe it was fashion, maybe it was convenience, maybe it was my preference, but now I am really enjoying brights so much more. Also, it is more flattering as I age, of course. In Apfel we trust! xx

Wow! Such a beautiful coat Lisa! I wouldn’t want to send it back. I’m so glad you found a colourful coat that you love after sending the other one back. I tend to dress in black and navy when I’m in Paris but I’m definitely more parrot than pigeon. My daughter said to me earlier today while looking out onto the garden “I don’t want to sound mean but pigeons are quite boring”. Yep, definitely better to be a parrot 😉

Parrot vs Pigeon is such a genius concept for the article Lisa & yes all your posts are magazine article quality!
I’m not sure what bird I am, probably a bit of both depending on my mood.

The photos are amazing and that coat…just WOW! Love it, and love the idea of being able to rent gorgeous pieces that one might not have the opportunity to wear otherwise. I have to say that I am most often a parrot with the occasional pigeon day thrown in to mix things up! Life’s too short to be a pigeon! 🙂

Inspired post! I’d never thought of parrot vs pigeon, genius! However, I am more of a sparrow these days, and occasionally a sparrow that has fallen into a pot of bright orange paint… For some reason, I feel more tranquil and more myself in muted colours lately but I hope my inner parrot hasn’t flown away for good 😉 You wear that coat fabulously well.

Thank you, Rozanne, I really appreciate it. I like the idea of a sparrow that has fallen into a pot of bright orange paint! Some people wear muted colours beautifully (my best friend, for example) but I fade in them. I’ve always loved jewel-tone colours (and let’s be honest, JEWELS!). I’m sure your inner parrot is alive and well if you’re reading style blogs 🙂 xx

What a brilliant concept too. To rent a “designer” item makes so much sense. Stunning photos in a stunning city. Brava darling xxx

I love the irony of the pigeon photobombing your photo in the end after a discussion on being a parrot rather than a pigeon. The pigeon just had to sweep in at the end of the day =P. I definitely go through phases where I want to be more showy and days where I want to be more subtle. As long as you’re comfortable and feel good in your clothes you’ll look good! Love the movement of the coat.
