Pink and Pucci for Spring

Pink blossoms and Pucci

Every year when the pink cherry blossoms are out, I make a point to take some photos for the blog under this canopy in the park.  This year it seemed especially appropriate, since pink is set to be THE colour for spring and summer.  Like water on a stone, I’ve had such a stream of pink put in front of my eyeballs via Instagram and magazines that even my own resolute anti-pink stance has crumbled.  I recently bought a pink skirt (sequinned, of course) and quickly realised I had absolutely nothing to wear with it!  I’ll remedy that soon, but I missed my photo opportunity under the pink blooms.  Cherry blossoms wait for no man, so I opted to wear this much-loved old Pucci dress instead, before all of the flowers disappeared.  The wind was FIERCE the day we took these photos, so the trees are probably nearly bare already.

Here’s the best part about a Pucci dress– it could be from this year or 10 years ago.  A Pucci dress is all about retro appeal, so it doesn’t ever look out of date.  Missoni falls into this category as well.  Both brands have a strong aesthetic that you either love or hate (I’m a lover).  They are iconic pieces that stand the test of time, and while expensive, are worth an investment if you are Team Statement Print.  I think every closet needs one or two Missoni or Pucci style pieces.  With both brands, I only really like about 15% of what they do; a lot of the colours and patterns don’t appeal to me at all, but the ones I like, I LOVE!  Also, they both do a lot of beachwear (bikinis, coverups, sarongs, caftans, etc) but I don’t usually spend this sort of money on beachwear.  Pucci and Missoni often put a slightly putrid stripe or colour somewhere in the print to keep it from looking too perfect (the dress I’m wearing doesn’t have that though).  This design element reminds me of a well-crafted perfume where traditionally, a note or two of something really ‘off’ and pungent (indoles, ambergris, castoreum, civet glands, etc.) was added to give richness and contrast to the scent.  In the same way, just a touch of these slightly off colours enhances the colour palette.  I look forward each season to see what both of these brands come up with.  There are always a few pieces I fall completely in love with.   I do try to avoid some of the more delicate Missoni knitted scarves because I find they pick and pull too easily for me and my lifestyle.  Everything else is usually quite hardwearing.

Here are a few of my Pucci and Missoni favourites that are currently available, a few are even on sale.  It does make me laugh that all of them have pink!  I’m starting to think of pink as ‘light red’ which, technically, it is.  Did you know that pink used to be the colour associated with boys and blue with girls?  At one time (early 1900’s to be precise) pink was thought to be the stronger and more decisive colour.  I blame Barbie and Paris Hilton for ruining it for me, but I’m starting to come around…

This one is my favourite.  I love the Pucci spirograph print, and that sick putty colour just makes it for me.

This is a close second.  The pea and mint greens, tangerine orange, lavender, and both fuchsia and baby pink tones are a perfect mood-lifting clash.

This electric zig zag Missoni print screams summer.  I’m always into orange and fuchsia together.

This bamboo foliate print in a neutral-with-a-twist colour scheme is so elegant and wearable.  The colours are even better up close.

This perfect Pucci palm print is made better with an unpredictable palette. The cinnamon and ochre-mustard colours keep it fashion-y instead of Boca Raton grandmother going to lunch.

This is Missoni magnificence.  And on sale.  I’d like to pick out these colours with a bright long jacket or shoes… and of course jewellery.

I love an oversize skinny 70’s scarf, and this metallic one is seasonless.  Here the mustard colour freshens up a muted colour scheme.

This is reversible, on sale, and just what I’d like to cozy up in next winter! The sludgy greens are a classic Missoni contrast with the hot pink and plum.

Do you love these iconic Pucci and Missoni prints as much as I do, or do you think they are better left in the past?!

Totally with you about Pucci Lisa, obviously the retro edge does it for me every time. I don’t feel at all the same about Missoni funnily enough.
Agree also on the first dress of which the spirograph print incredibly continues from the body across to the arms without breaking! Me want ?
I will rename this post “Beauty under Blossoms” you are so divine x

I’m surprised you don’t like Missoni! Except for the traditional zig zags, I can hardly tell the two apart sometimes. I adore that first dress too, I really really love everything about it. You could really wear it four seasons of the year with the right light coloured coat (she says, trying to justify the price tag…). Thank you, lovely xx

That is SUCH a gorgeous dress! And what a lovely backdrop. I still have trouble finding prints (especially in a larger piece like a dress) that don’t wear ME. But I always appreciate a well done print.

Thank you so much, Susan. I don’t wear a lot of print, but Missoni and Pucci are largely exempt from my no-print policy! xx

Oh, how I love this gorgeous dress, Lisa! The canopy of cherry trees is also beautiful. I am also not a pink person, but I am slowly being converted I believe.

Thank you, Jennie! I love the dress too… its an oldie but goodie. I think we’re getting converted to pink because finally it is being worn in a modern fresh way so it doesn’t have the same overly girly connotations. I bet I see you in pink before August 🙂 xx

I just finished writing a post for next week featuring a Chevron print that was made popular by Missoni. In the 70 s. Pucci was in my puberty one of my favorites! To look at that is….
The dresses are wonderfull, I love the kind of psychedilic print that Pucci often uses!

I love PINK….all shades! Even painted my bedroom walls pin back in the nineties….my daughter, not so much. She always rolls her eyes when I try and get her to wear pink. Can’t wait to see the pink skirt!

Love Pucci but haven’t indulged too much. Definitely never indulged in Missoni or Etro. Pink probably won’t be in my top three but it’s definitely in my second tier of preferred colors.

So many comments to make about this luscious post. First off, the flowers. I suppose this is the closest I’m every going to get to seeing you in a floral?? Second, that dress! I love Pucci but thought I was too old, too short and roundish, and not dirty or rich enough to pull it off. You have changed my mind! (Not that you are any of those things. Well maybe you are!) Last, the accessories. Don’t laugh but I believe that your towering intellect and sublime taste show up most in the accessories you choose. You never play it safe and it always makes us want to knock you down and steal something.

Oh Mithra, that’s the best comment ever! Yeah, you’re not likely to see me in a floral… this may be the closest we get. You are definitely likely to see me in more Pucci or Missoni though. I’m so pleased you like the accessories; sometimes I think the only point of wearing clothes is to have a good backdrop for accessories 🙂 Love to you, xx

Oh yes, a beautiful dress. I am sure it is worth the investment as it looks so good on you. I am always very much in favour of Sportmax, a bit less conservative than Max Mara, well designed, nice material and usually rather timeless. And not as expensive as Pucci or Missoni, although still enough money. Missoni is not a brand for me anyway. All that knit stuff on my figure is aweful. I tried several of them and then decided it wasn’t for me. They do however have beautiful tunics that do suit me.
As for your pictures and the pink blossom: AWESOME. And you are so in tune with that background in your lovely dress.

Thank you Greetje! I’ve learned that this dress is a little divisive… yes, it is a print, but I prefer this Miami style print to say, a girly floral. I love all the colours in it too… it feels very cheery and summery. I can totally see you in Missoni tunic, for sure. I’m really noticing Sportmax a lot lately, all because of you, I’m sure! xx

When I opened your post I gasped. So pretty – both you and the Cherry blossoms. Like you, I once had a strong aversion toward pink. But, as of late, I’ve been very attracted to very soft pink – like the shade of the blossoms.
