Postcard from Sicily

Sciacca and sea

Whenever I am in Siclily, or anywhere Mediterranean, I feel as if I have come home, as if I am viewing the very crucible where Western civilisation began. I feel a strange magnetic thread, a vestigial umbilical cord, or who knows, maybe even a past life experience, that connects me to previously unseen scenery that looks and smells and feels so familiar… that feels like home. When humans colonised the Mediterranean, a region where the climate, the land, and the sea all conspired to enable not just survival but prosperity, their focus could turn to the luxury of creating civilisation: philosophy, democracy, government, literature, theatre, wine(!), etc.  The clever Greeks were the first to colonise Sicily (734 BC at what is now Taormina, a breathtakingly beautiful city I’ve been to), and they left their mark everywhere, as did the Arabs, the Romans, the Normans, the Byzantines, and all the other cultures who have wanted this strategically well-placed beautiful island for themselves.

Anyway, here I am on the southwestern coast of Sicily, desperately wanting to go and explore every ancient historical corner, but we’re travelling with our toddler, who somewhat limits the amount of time we can spend on archaeological ruins!  I’ve managed a few excursions, but I’m lounging around reading and eating far too much delicious pasta in the child friendly resort.

It is warm but windy here, so I’ve been wearing this black dress from Cos and my comfortable man-repelling platform sandals a lot.  The dress is double layered jersey (not sheer) with pockets (yay!) and feels like I’m wearing pyjamas (win).  I’ve worn it to dinner with a wrap and nice jewellery, and just plain for daytime.  I like it so much that I might buy it in another colour, besides my beloved black.  I’ll admit it isn’t the most flattering dress I own, but what it lacks in flattery it makes up for in comfort and practicality for a holiday, when I refuse to carry a handbag, but still need somewhere to stash keys, phone, and a lipstick.

I’m including a few photos that I took of the things I found most beautiful on this trip. Everywhere you look, there is so much beauty and history, so it was hard to narrow it down to a handful.  I hope you enjoy the photos; think of them as postcards to you from The Sequinist!
