Tibi Off the Shoulder Tunic

Tibi grey flannel off shoulder topRemember back in the summer, when I fell for Tibi’s off the shoulder cotton poplin top, which sold out on Net A Porter several times?  Well, I missed out, so I decided to buy the winter version which was exactly the same top, but in soft grey wool flannel.  I did have some misgivings. It seemed a little crazy to buy something as impractical as a warm wool tunic that was also off the shoulder.  What’s next, a down filled bikini?  A winter coat made of chiffon?  The to-hell-with-practicality-and-long-live-fashion element of this shirt appealed to me, and I bravely ordered it on a hot, sweaty July day when I was in North Carolina, and couldn’t possibly imagine anything worse than wool flannel.

Fast forward to now, and guess who is not looking so crazy? We’ve had the mildest winter so I’ve been flouncing about in my wool off the shoulder top.  It seems like the ideal thing to wear in this weather.   The fashion world would call this a ‘transitional wardrobe’ piece. Not too hot, not too cold, and makes a nice change from a sweater/jumper. These photos were taken on Christmas Eve eve, which was the most glorious day in London.

On a standalone basis, the shirt has a slightly bohemian, peasant-blouse feel.  I was worried I’d look like I should be taking orders in a beer garden if I didn’t rock n’ roll it up, so I added some metal-chain-fringed satin boots, silver aviator sunglasses, faux leather jeans, my ubiquitous Hermes cuff bracelet, and a single earring.  Now I feel like my overall look doesn’t say so much “Wollen Sie ein Bier?” as it does “I’m with the band!” (ok, it probably says “I’m the Mom of the drummer in the band” but you get my point).

Another evening, I wore this to a friend’s house for a dinner party, but since her house is always FREEZING, I wanted to add a layer and style it completely differently.  I put an & Other Stories silk shirt underneath (which I wore a year ago).  I’m going for a sort of Amish meets Beer Garden vibe here (!) with the layered shirts.  Just to add some more bonkers elements, I wore it with my bejewelled wedding shoes and a fox clutch!  I don’t know why such a hodgepodge of things works for me, but I like it.

    What the fox say?
Seriously though that bag is amazing! I think Kate Spade has upped her game lately, I wasn’t a fan originally. Your idea of wearing a white shirt underneath the top is brilliant Lisa & actually my favourite of your styles although those boots are genius with the leopard fringe… Ahh love 😉

I never liked Kate Spade either. Too pink, too cute, and too many godforsaken bows, but once she sold the company, it got SO MUCH better! The accessories are super quirky. I love them! Thank you, Michelle, I’m so pleased you liked the post! xx

When I look at off the shoulder pieces, it makes me think of one thing. That the guys back then in the 17-18th century knew exactly how to entice the senses. Exposing the neck and shoulders, some of the most erogenous female zones (and if you don’t believe me, try to tickle or bite into the neck of a Leo woman) is just soooooo sensual. I personally prefer v-neck tunics though where the v-neck is so deep that it slides off off one shoulder (very unintentionally), but love your wool tunic Lisa too. While I love everything you wear in this post, my favourite is the Fox clutch – so original! Happy New Year to you Lisa!

You’re right about shoulders… and as Donna Karan points out, they also age better than the rest of us, so they look good for a long time! I adore the Fox clutch too, Abby. Thanks so much, and Happy New Year to you! xx

Love these looks! I can’t bear wool touching my skin, so the white shirt underneath is a winner for me–but I do love the look of exposed shoulders. My shoulders are about the only part left of my body that I’d subject the public to seeing naked!

you look INCREDIBLY cool and chic – I think I’d look a bit ridiculous – there is definitely a skill to wearing a top like this and owning it – I think you nailed it x

I think a down bikini sounds righteous 🙂
Your descriptions were incredibly funny. Thank you for the humor. Well guess what, this week on my blog I’ll wear an off the should cable-knit sweater. Go figure. Never say never, right? I think rocker-chic suits you just fine. What a cool look the boots are screaming hot!

Given the unseasonably warm weather in London recently, you might want to book a ticket to the mid-Atlantic for an immediate trip since we’re currently experiencing temperatures in the single digits.

The top is gorgeous, and I like it styled both with and without the shirt. There’s just something about wool flannel! Your wedding shoes are stunning – I hope your guests could see them! The fox clutch is so special and unexpected. You look gorgeous!

Wow! That top is so chic, and a very unusual style for Winter. It’s wonderful that the mild weather has given you the chance to wear it often, because you look amazing in it! Love the leopard fringe boots, too 🙂
