How to Wear Pink Sequins Like a Grownup

pink sequin skirt

Just as I mentioned in my last post, I’ve gone and bought a pink sequin skirt.  Me.  Hater of pink.  In my defence, I was more swayed by the sequins than the colour.  I like that these sequins are a matte rosy pink instead of shiny bubblegum pink… it takes the fairy princess factor down a notch.

Also keeping my outfit out of princess territory are my slightly-ghetto-fabulous chrome nails.   I’m in love with how shiny they are!  After wearing these for a week, I’m not sure I can ever go back to normal polish.

Pink sequins chrome nails

The last details to kill any princess vibes are a badass chrome clutch and my standard Hermes studded cuff.  Both look slightly weapon-y which makes me happy.

I don’t quite know what I was thinking when I bought this skirt, but I of course am more susceptible than most to the ‘shiny object’ syndrome when shopping.  This skirt is not a length that I EVER wear because (frankly) it looks a bit frumpy on me, but again… shiny object syndrome.

My favourite part of this outfit is the slogan shirt.  We very well may be going to San Tropez this summer, so it seemed like a good idea (plus, I hate crème brûlée).  It’s also a nod to my new fitness challenge to myself.  I’ve been pushing myself to go to gym twice as much for the last month, and I can’t believe how much better I feel.  I sleep better, I’m less irritable, and I have much more energy (and my goodness, do I NEED it, as any of you who have met my particularly energetic four year old son can attest!).  Trying to blog weekly, look after a young child, go to gym nearly every day, and launch a jewellery line (more on that very soon) is proving to be a real challenge.  So far, this bigger time commitment to my health is paying dividends in energy to do everything else that I need to do.

I found a pair of pink sunglasses in my stash, and quickly figured out why I never wear them (they’re so transparent I can’t even wear them when it is sunny) so I switched them for my current favourite black ones.  I’ll save these rose-tinted glasses for a grey day!

pink sequin skirt

So, I seem to have finally been converted to pink.  As you know, I think everyone needs a sequin skirt, and I suppose I needed to add a pink one to my arsenal.  I’ll style it with more colour in the future… with lavender or green or sky blue, but for now, I’m practicing dipping my toe in pink waters.  I’m even thinking of getting this pink waterfall necklace from my own shop (which I already have and LOVE in blue) to go with the skirt.  Styling-wise, it makes sense to have two ‘anchor pieces’ in pink, and any other colours of shoes, coats, and tops can either contrast or match with them.  I can put a simple sweater, a tank top, a sweatshirt, or a nice blouse between a pink necklace and a pink skirt and have a range of things to wear to any occasion.

Can you see yourself wearing a pink sequin skirt, or is it just too fairy princess for you?

I’m loving your twist on the pink skirt! I am finding that I’m loving pink more and more, especially around my face. I get compliments on my skin when I wear it, so it’s hard to say no to it. The closest I got to pink before was fushia! And girl….THAT JEWELRY! Can’t wait to hear about that!

Thank you, Lee Ann! That’s a good tip about wearing pink (or flattering colour) around your face… it gives me a good excuse to wear more statement necklaces 🙂 Like you, I only wore pink in the fuchsia/shocking pink category before, but the shift is occurring! xx

For someone who never wore pink, you sure do it justice Lady! The Sequinist page opened on my computer at the two glorious top posts dominated by soft pink – I have to wonder if this change wasn’t meant to be?
I adore the sequins skirt, especially the length contrary to what you think I love the midi on you. The slightly sarcastic Tee is a clever touch & keeps the outfit from being too girlie sweet.
Lisa I have to say every post you publish is such high quality, from the styling & photography through to layout & copy that I’m always looking forward to what you’ll do next!

OH MY! That is such a big compliment, thank you so so much, Michelle. I’m also pleased you’re liking all the pink; I’ve just bought two pink clutches in the past week, so it looks like I’ll be adding a few rosy touches into my wardrobe. Thank you again, my darling friend. xx

Agree agree agree with retrochicmama, above. Love this post with all its elements. Fascinating thing, what part or something captures each of us. Love the skirt, btw, with its patchiness. I’d have been perplexed about shoes and you really rocked this with the smaller sparkles. It works! Also am following closely with your words about working out. I’m just finally getting through to the other side of a miniscus tear and have not been moving much as a result. I’m dog tired and not sleeping well at all. Stepping up the movement as you have, is probably the thing. xo

Movement keeps me from being a grouchy ogre, Jan! Otherwise, I’m really a pain to live with; everything gets on my nerves, whereas when I am exercising nearly daily, I’m practically running through life with flower petals and a butterfly net (ok, not really). Thank you for your lovely words. I’m hoping you’re moving and feeling much better soon. xx

Oh yes! I saw this skirt at H&M and wanted it but when I threw it on it didn’t look good on me. I never wear sequins, perhaps that was it. But it sure looks pretty damn good on you. And that tee is perfection. Totally love this outfit and of course now I feel sorry that I didn’t buy the skirt…

I almost DIDN’T buy the skirt because I saw it all over Instagram in the winter, but after I gave my eyeballs a rest, I thought I could finally bring it out of hiding! I think the skirt is still available if you change your mind! Thank you so much, Nancy. xx

Agreeing with Michelle, nothing wrong with the length of the skirt. It looks very cool on you. I love the skirt. H&M hah? Hmm, might need it. (I am such a copy cat. No just joking. I now have two sequined tops, that will do me fine.) The T-shirt is fun too, but I love crème brûlée.
Might I suggest to add a belt to the skirt? Not sure what kind, but I thought that would look nice. Not with this T-shirt though.
And a jewellery line?? … exciting times. The piece you are showing looks terrific on you. Exactly right in that V of your sweater. How come you don’t have any wrinkles? Are you still that young? Or just bloody lucky?

Thank you, Greetje. You SHOULD get the skirt.. maybe for the Blog Awards?! Yeah, I think a belt would be good too, I just didn’t have one that worked with the tee shirt.

I’m so excited about the jewellery; I am just having a hard time finding the time to get everything uploaded onto my website. There are some amazing pieces, and plenty more to come in the future. I’m 47, so I definitely have wrinkles, but not too many on my neck.. yet. xx

The skirt is gorgeous on you. I love the color– so much better that color than too teenager pink color. I do love the necklace too. It’s perfectly suited… Think about wearing it with a colored tee. Not pink.. but something with a strong pop of color to wear with that skirt and necklace)

Fabulous skirt! I’d definitely wear it. I had a thing for pink in my early 30s, and for no particular reason – maybe it was overkill – I went off it completely and didn’t wear it for years. Now I’ve come full circle because I love it again. The t-shirt is fun…and much more classy than “no carbs before Marbs”! ?

These nails are Chrome acrylics from a company called Nail Hur (‘makeup for nails’ is their slogan!). I am really rubbish at keeping up with my nails due to a lack of time, so I cheat and use acrylics if I have an event where I need to be more ‘done’. I may just go back to gels again, that is the only way I can keep them long. Back to you, I googled and found that you can get Chrome nails without using acrylics; I’m really not an expert, so you’ll need to ask a proper nail tech person how to get that mirror finish. Keep me posted! xx
