Skincare launch from The White Company

The White Company skincare products

The White Company is one of my favourite British brands.  Like many of my favourite brands it was started by a very entrepreneurial woman.  My UK readers will be very well acquainted with The White Company, but since they’re new to my US and Canadian readers, I’ll give you a quick bit of background.  I was trying to think of a North American store to use as a reference to discuss The White Company, but I can’t think of anything similar.  The closest comparable is Restoration Hardware, but their aesthetic is different.  Chrissie Rucker started The White Company 20+ years ago when she couldn’t find affordable luxurious white bed linens and white home decor items.  She launched it as a mail-order business for elegant white linens and towels… then tableware, furniture, candles, women’s clothing, and a children’s line were added.  Eventually, the company evolved into a home decor and lifestyle brand with 50 outlets in the UK, and a very recent expansion to North America.  The White Company is known for its modern, clean, elegant, pared-back style.  There are no bright colours; everything is white (or neutral), restful, and spa-like, with a slight hygge feel… long before the whole world started getting hygge with it.  In our home, almost all of our bed linens and towels are from The White Company.  I’ve always preferred pure white bed linens to anything coloured.  I do appreciate some beautiful details… white on white embroidered flowers, a white shadow stripe, or maybe a grey embroidered detail around the edge if I’m feeling particularly bold.  Some of our bed linens from The White Company are 15 years old, in constant use with a steady stream of houseguests, and they still look perfect.

The home accessories range is reliably chic and stylish.  Whenever I need a gift or hostess present for someone, this is my go-to store for photo frames, beautifully scented candles (Spring is my favourite), tasteful baby gifts, vases (I gifted some silver mercury glass bud vases to myself at Christmas), etc..  The only section of The White Company I don’t buy anything from is the clothing.  It isn’t crazy enough for my more-is-more style, but lots of people love it for high quality basics.  In fact, my blogging buddy RetroChicMama swears by their white jeans; apparently the quality, fit, and durability are second to none.  While my wardrobe is an explosion of colour and sparkle, my home is calming and totally neutral.  Almost everything is white, but there are a few tones of silver, grey and taupe, with plenty of natural wood.  Over the years, I’ve bought a lot from The White Company because the style works particularly well for my home and suits my need for a bright white place to perch!

Shifting gears to skincare…

Last week, The White Company launched its first skincare range.  They contacted me to see if  any of the products interested me.  Given how much I like the rest of the brand, I thought it could be interesting to try.  I needed a new cleanser, so I asked for the Super Balm, and I adore facial oils, so I asked to try the Night Oil too.  You’ll know from previous posts (or if you know me in real life) that I am absolutely obsessed with skincare (having eczema doesn’t help).  Chrissie Rucker was a beauty journalist prior to launching The White Company, so she was very specific about what she wanted in her products and who she chose to partner with to create them.  Together, she and DECIEM have created a tightly edited line.  You’re not overwhelmed with choice, but what is on offer is top quality.

The White Company Super Balm cleanser

First, let’s look at the Super Balm.  I can honestly say that this is one of the best and most unusual cleansers I’ve ever used.  It looks like a thick lotion coming out of the tube.  You rub a marble-sized amount of this fresh lemon scented balm onto your skin.  After just a moment of contact, it transforms into a light oil, taking away every bit of makeup without leaving your skin feeling dry or stripped all.  I am usually a double-cleansing kind of gal, but with this product I don’t need to.  The instructions say to remove it with a hot facecloth, but my eczema-prone skin is so ridiculously sensitive in the winter I can’t use anything that abrasive, so I simply use tepid water to remove it.  I then very gently blot my face with a soft towel before sealing in the moisture with oil.  I’m impressed with how clean, lightly moisturised, and comfortable my ultra-sensitive winter skin is after washing with this.

The White Company Night Oil

The second product I’ve been using is the Night Oil.  I’m sort of kicking myself that I didn’t ask for the serum, because I have so many facial oils already.  This one has anti-oxidants, and boosts radiance and hydration.  I like the Night Oil so much that I’ve been using it in the daytime as well.  After I cleanse, I put a few generous drops into my palms and press it into my skin.  Despite being a Night Oil, it feels fairly light to me.  I often use some VERY heavy avocado oil on my face at night, so by comparison, this is light.  I’m still using the same Jane Iredale mineral makeup I’ve used for years; it applies and sits BEAUTIFULLY over a light layer of this oil.  I’ve not had any skin irritation or breakouts (and my skin is pretty cranky in winter) while I’ve been using these two White Company products exclusively.  I’ve not used anything else (apart from eye cream) in my skincare routine so I could give them a proper evaluation.

I’m VERY pleased to report that these products are not tested on animals (otherwise I wouldn’t have reviewed them).  I’m also pleased to report that I like the products so well (otherwise I wouldn’t have reviewed them!).  They strike a nice balance between being natural (good ingredient list) and being high-tech (effective).  I’ll get my hands on some of the Super Serum and report back on that.  The White Company is opening a store in New York in June of 2017, so soon you’ll be seeing more of their fabulous things Stateside. Until then, there is online.  I’ve put links below to all the things I’ve mentioned so you can check them out.

First let me say these images are stunning Lisa. There is nothing better than seeing original photographs in a beauty review post as opposed to catalogue or stock photos. These are genuinely far superior to any I’ve seen in a very long time!
As for the products themselves I’m also a great fan of face oils but it’s the cleanser that’s really fascinating to me. I’ll be ordering it as soon as I’ve finished my comment. Thanks for a beautiful & informative article x

This night oil sounds ideal for me. Just as you do, I like wearing them in the morning. I am using one from Khiels for years now and I want to change it! I would love to try this one you recommend! I can always rely on your reviews 🙂
Fantastic photos by the way, they really belong in a magazine!
    Happy Monday my beauty!

Which one from Kiehl’s have you been using? This particular I reviewed is nice and light, and my skin really loves it. Thank you for your compliment on the photography; I’m a real pain about getting the photos how I want them on my blog. Love to you xx

I only use Clinique as I have a very sensitive skin. Tulips are my favorite flower, And I love white ones. I threw mine away today because the cat did like them too!

I also have really sensitive skin; I actually break out from a few Clinique products, especially the Dramatically Different lotion. You might like this range. xx

Do you mean by that, that you don’t use the lotion anymore? I use it.

I can’t use the Clinique Dramatically Different lotion; my skin has always reacted badly to it for some reason. It doesn’t provide me with much hydration, and I get pimples from using it. 🙁

I agree completely with Michelle about the beautiful photography- simply gorgeous. It’s good to know that the products are kind even to skins that are sensitive due to eczema or similar. I too have only white bed linens and they’re also from The White Company as are my white bath towels. The quality is excellent and they withstand washing over and over. I adore their “Winter” candle too xxx

When I saw the title I thought: yeah, about time! Just like you Lisa I love everything The White Company, their crisp white bedlinen (and what a coincidence, just like you I prefer white over color), their most soft and fluffy cashmeres, candles. Basically I’m hooked on TWC, I could easily buy the whole stock out. In fact, it was my favourite shop when I was living back in London, in Marylebone. So, I’m really looking forward to trying their new skin care range. Lots of love to you Lisa! Abby

I agree with Michelle – your photography is absolutely beautiful!
I’ve only just been introduced to The White Company on my recent trip to the UK. I’d never been in their store before so you can probably imagine my absolute delight walking in. The decor in the shops is second to none, not to mention the yummy scents in the air too. I did have a look through their clothes and did spot a couple of lovely pieces. There was a cashmere jumper that caught my eye but I resisted (I must stop myself from doing that!). I’d love to try their new beauty products. Perhaps I’ll treat myself the next time in England.

I also have battled eczema and I’m always searching for organic products. The cleanser sounds great…fresh lemon scent sounds enchanting. Just wondering, the cleanser seems like it’s an oil base. Did you find the cleanser and the Night Oil made you feel overly oily?

The cleanser is gorgeous; I’m crazy about it. It seems to be a water soluble oil, so not heavy at all. The Night Oil (in London winter with heating on all the time) isn’t remotely overly oily on me. In fact, today, I put Waleda’s Iris day cream OVER the oil because it wasn’t quite enough for my eczema dry patches on my skin. I hope that helps, Glenda! xx

Thank you for introducing me to the White Company, Lisa! The product range sounds awesome and since all my furniture is white, I need to have a closer look (and visit a London store together next time?)
Glad you mentioned the lovely smell of the cleanser – that’s so important for me!
