I am a bit religious about black tights (I wrote about them before in this post, How to get Black Tights Right). I adore them. I weep at the passing of winter, because warm weather means I’ll have to bare my chalky white legs again. As I mentioned in my previous post on black tights, many is the winter morning that I stand in front of my closet with my essentials on: bra, undies, and black tights, deciding what to wear on top of my winter undergarment trifecta.
Tights are to my body what foundation is to my face. Like all good foundations, they accent the positive and cover up the negative. My go-to tights for the last few years are the Wolford Satin Deluxe. Let me tell you why. First, they have a seam on the back of the legs… a detail which is retro, glamorous, and sexy in a very elegant way. Second, they are as black as wet coal… not a half-hearted, washed-out black. Third, and most importantly, they are SHINY. Shiny in the way that a panther is shiny. The shiny bit is important, because aside from making them a little special, it also means they’re slippery, so your clothes just slither over you instead of clinging where you don’t want them to.
All three pairs of my son’s shoes have damn velcro fastenings on them, and like a heat seeking missile, the velcro aims for my fancy tights and absolutely destroys them… usually in the mornings while I am trying to wrestle him into a school uniform. Last winter, I had three pairs of these Satin de Luxe tights of perfection, and they were all decimated by his velcro fastenings. Prior to velcro being a daily part of my life, I’d get 2 or 3 years out of these tights, easily. As soon as he learns how to tie shoes with actual laces, I’ll get longevity out of my hosiery once again.
A few weeks ago, when I was shopping in Selfridges with my blog pal, Mithra, of The Bubble Joy (she was visiting London), we popped into the Wolford hosiery section to re-stock my supply of Satin De Luxe tights. They were sold out in all sizes except for Extra Small, which I clearly am not! A few days later, I went to the Wolford store in Westfield. They were also sold out. Apparently (so I was told), there was a glitch in the supply of these from Austria this year. I stopped by the Wolford store on Marylebone High Street. Sold out. Dizzy with this-can’t-be-happening panic and velcro-anger, I phoned the other Wolford Stores in London. ALL. SOLD. OUT. Even the Wolford website is sold out; how is this possible? This may not be a crisis for you, but there are times I wear black tights for 7 days in a row (not the same pair, obviously), and yes I have the fantastic matte ones I mentioned in my other post, and that I wore in my previous post with the leopard skirt… but I need my shiny, slithery, panthery, foundationy ones.
I did what any sensible person would do. I came home and googled my beloved Wolford Satin Deluxe tights (surely SOMEONE must have a pair gathering dust in a drawer somewhere on this planet?) and guess who has them fully stocked in every size? Amazon! They’re the same price as Wolford sells them for, which unfortunately, is a lot. Tights, like shoes, are one of those items that you really get what you pay for. If you scrimp on them, they don’t wash well, they don’t last, they don’t retain their colour or shape, and they go sheer in all the wrong places. If you need some perfect tights in your life, these are them. Mine arrived in the post yesterday. I’m so thrilled to have them again that I went all Peaches & Herb and sang, ‘Reunited and it feels SO GOOD! Reunited and it’s understood, There’s one perfect fit, And sugar, this one is it…’ Perfect shiny, slithery, panthery, tights are linked below. You’ll thank me if you’ve never tried these before:
Here they are on Amazon in the US
Sadly, not my legs in this photo, but look at the fabric!

January 15, 2017 at 11:36 AMJust burst out laughing at your final sentence Lisa! You cracked me up…
It’s the absolute worst finding a favourite item out of stock or discontinued that’s for sure. I’m also a massive fan of Wolford & won’t buy any other tights Brand.

January 15, 2017 at 5:12 PMI’m new to your blog but have been aware of you through bloggers I’ve been following.
I really loved reading your story of seeking your personal holy grail of tights! You’ve clearly illustrated how “fashion love” can have many meanings!!!
Lisa

January 15, 2017 at 7:16 PMI was reading your post like a thriller, Lisa! Will she get them at the end or not? Phew, was I glad Amazon came to the rescue ????. It reminds me of my underwear story with La Perla. Whenever they have something I like I buy it double because sooner than later it will be out and I will be left without my favourite pieces. Lots of love! ❤️ xx Abby

January 15, 2017 at 8:00 PMHa ha, she FINALLY got her tights and rode off into the sunset 🙂 Love to you, Abby xx

January 15, 2017 at 8:23 PMLisa! Again I learn from you. Heading to Amazon, because I hate “half-hearted, washed-out black” tights. I want them black as coal, and as sexy as a third chapter woman can demand.
Lisa
January 15, 2017 at 8:34 PMNo, Jan, we can’t be having any half-hearted washed-out black tights. No way, no how. Let me know how you get on with them, love. xx

Little Red
January 16, 2017 at 3:14 AMI don’t have this particular pair of Wolford tights but I’ve bought other types of tights and even sheer pantyhose and they’re great. I’m glad that Amazon came through for you because I was going to offer to pick up a few pairs for you. There’s a Wolford store location right next door so I’ll check them out the next time I go into the mall.
Lisa
January 16, 2017 at 8:04 PMI also love the Miss W Wolford tights; they wear like iron, every if you wear them almost daily. When I wore suits to work every day, I lived in them! Let me know what you think of the Satin De Luxes, if you get them Little Red. xx

January 18, 2017 at 11:27 AMLOL I’m so glad you found some, Lisa!!! I LOVE black tights as well – but living in the Algarve, I don’t get to wear them that much – a couple of months perhaps? But to be honest, I’ve never really paid a lot of money for them. I usually wear them a few times and then chuck them out. Maybe it’s time I invested in a pair of Wolford’s!!
Hugs
Suzy xx
Lisa
January 18, 2017 at 7:46 PMYes, I think you need some Wolfords, Suzy! As infrequently as you wear them, they’ll last decades! xx
Mithra Ballesteros
January 18, 2017 at 2:33 PMFun read!! Even the mundane becomes suspenseful under your deft touch. Thanks for the mention and I’m deeply relieved that Goldilocks and her tights do not suffer separation. As far as your lad and his Velcro, he needs those bungee laces that they make for toddlers and people with arthritis. Like these: http://www.arthritissupplies.com/coilers-elastic-shoelaces.html?gclid=CNSmr8Lzy9ECFYy2wAodeikDkQ

January 18, 2017 at 7:44 PMGlad you enjoyed it Mithra, and even more glad you were a player in my drama! I think my little man does need some of those stretchy shoe laces… what a great idea. xx
Laurie
January 18, 2017 at 10:33 PMGlad you found them! I get you on the shiny sliding thing and non clinging to what your wearing. I always have a problem finding tights not too long in the leg, always trying to steer clear of the Nora batty look x

January 20, 2017 at 9:15 AMThanks, Laurie! I always have a problem with tights being too short; I’m pleased the Austrians are tall so Wolfords work well on me. xx

January 19, 2017 at 5:45 PMPeople shriek when they find out how expensive they are, but I am a Wolford fan as well. I have a pair that are 20 years old. How they got past my children’s velcroed & stick wielding youth, I do not know. Perhaps they were cleverly cowering & biding their time in the back of the drawer?
Lisa
January 20, 2017 at 9:13 AMBuying cheap stockings is such a false economy; you really do get what you pay for. I love that you have some that are 20 years old, WOW! xx

January 22, 2017 at 3:21 PMNow I know for sure that I have discovered a kindred spirit!! When I find something I like that works in my wardrobe or beauty routine it is just apocalyptic when it disappears from my life!!! Here’s hoping that you were able to find those fab tights. On another note, being a bit of a magpie myself with a love for sparkly things, how did did I ever live without a Sequin skirt?!?! That giant whole in my wardrobe has now been rectified!!! Many thanks! XO. Marlena
Lisa
January 22, 2017 at 3:41 PMOH, I’m so happy to hear that, Marlena! I did find the tights on Amazon, thank goodness.
I certainly don’t know HOW you lived without a sequin skirt, but I am relieved to hear that the situation has been remedied now, and I hope that I played some part in that. 🙂 xx

January 22, 2017 at 8:51 PMIsn’t it fantastic how happy you can be when you think all is lost and you find the last stock? Well done. I am beginning to like Wolford tights as well. You are right, they last longer and are perfect. I usually have the hold-ups.

January 27, 2017 at 5:50 PMI quite agree that these are the most comfy and luxurious tights ever. I have loved all of my purchases from Wolford but Satin De Luxe tights are my favourites.

September 7, 2018 at 5:46 AMI’m trans/crossdresser/drag queen – Wolford Satin De Luxe tights are gorgeous and they are the only tights I wear. Years ago they used to make bodysuits and catsuis from the same fabric ( I still have a bodysuit) I wish they would recommence producing them again; the combination of the tights and bodysuit is so luxurious and slinky. Thanks for writing such a great article.
Lisa
September 10, 2018 at 10:11 AMI’d kill to have a catsuit made out of that same fabric! Let me know if you ever see them again, I’m in! Glad you liked xx
Chrissie
September 10, 2018 at 3:47 PMThanks for you kind, accepting reply. Likewise, a Satin De Luxe catsuit would be wonderful. I just noticed a that a company with several stores in Berlin (where I reside), have just released what looks likes a copy of Woldfords’ product for the incredibly cheap price of €12.95! I’ve just ordered a couple of pairs to see what they’re like. Will keep you posted. xx

October 6, 2018 at 5:58 AMHi Lisa. An update about the tights I mentioned from Calzedonia, I’ve worn them on a couple of nights out and I’m delighted with them. They are an incredibly close match to the look and feel of Walford Satin Deluxe; they seem durable and wash well. Given that you can purchase three pairs for less than the price of one pair of Wolford I absolutely recommend anyone to try them. Will post a couple of photos of them in the coming days xx
